Quick Profile of an Interesting Person: Ed Bott
- by Scott Whigham on January 8, 2009 5:45 AMAs Windows 7's release date creeps closer and closer, I've begun seeing one man's name and articles in my RSS feeds - Ed Bott. If you're looking for someone interesting to follow in your RSS, check out the sort of posts he's been putting out recently:
- Five things Steve Ballmer won't tell you about Windows 7
- If you love Windows XP, you'll hate Windows 7
- Surprises in the Windows 7 license agreement
- Seven Questions Microsoft Won't Answer About Windows 7
- Originally published Oct 28, 2008. As of January 8, 2009, most of these have actually now been answered. Still - an interesting post at the time
- Six Vista annoyances fixed in Windows 7
- To be fair, these are extremely minor annoyances that were "fixed" but still interesting...
- A Deep Dive into Windows 7
- This isn't some forum-post-quality article that's full of screenshots
- With Vista SP2, Microsoft is Back on Track
- Another high quality article
What I like about Ed is that:
- He writes about interesting topics
- He writes thoroughly about those topics (he's likely to give you a legitimate 7 page article, for example)
- He pulls no punches ("Good lord, that was the worst CES keynote ever. I watched it over the Internet from a hotel room in Hawaii and finally gave up about two-thirds of the way through." posted January 7, 2009 - read it here)
Ed is also an author (see his books on amazon.com here)
So check him out.
Protip: don't use Internet Explorer to view the ZDNet.com website - it's just so full of annoying ads that it's un-viewable IMO. What I would suggest is to use Firefox coupled with the AdBlock add-on (available for free here). Then, after viewing a page or two, you can right click and block the more offensive/annoying advertiser's images.
