SharePoint Security – ForeFront with SP3 Released
- by Grant Moyle on July 6, 2009 5:45 AMLast week, Microsoft released “Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint with Service Pack 3” – a long title but, in effect, it’s simply the latest release of ForeFront. ForeFront has been one of the more confusing bits from Microsoft in recent years – you can download ForeFront for SharePoint, for Exchange, ISA, as well as anti-virus plus (in case that wasn’t confusing enough) there is the ForeFront Threat Management Gateway along with the admin console. Sheesh…
Anyway, for your SharePoint installations, ForeFront is at least interesting if not a “should be required” bolt-on. Here’s the corporate spiel:
Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint integrates multiple scan engines from industry-leading vendors and provides content controls to help protect your Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 collaboration environments from documents that contain malicious code, confidential information, and inappropriate content. Forefront Security for SharePoint provides comprehensive protection against the latest threats to help ensure documents are safe before they are saved to or retrieved from the SharePoint document library. Features include antimalware engine amendments and rollup of software fixes
Basically this adds more security to your SharePoint installation. For those of you with public-facing SharePoint installs, you definitely need something to protect your servers and users and ForeFront is a great option.
